Four Ideas for Teaching About Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is one of those fun holidays that teachers can easily create engaging cross-curricular lessons around to make a fun day of learning. Here are four ideas for teaching about Groundhog Day and incorporating Groundhog Day into your lessons on February 2nd.

1. Take a Virtual Field Trip to Punxsutawny, Pennsylvania for Groundhog Day

What could be a better way to introduce your students to this celebration when you are teaching about Groundhog Day than taking a virtual trip to the place this holiday originated! Students will learn about the history behind the groundhog day tradition, why Punxsutawney is the site for the celebrations, explore the city, watch Phil make his prediction, learn about shadows, and even have the chance to draw a groundhog! Students will end the trip by making their own predictions about winter.

2. Graphing Groundhog Day Predictions

Do you think the groundhog will see his shadow? Will winter come to an early end? When teaching about Groundhog Day, do a class graph to record predictions about whether or not winter will end. You can use these cute groundhog faces to chart student votes.

3. Spot The Groundhog Escape Room

So you’re taking the time to teach about Groundhog Day, then why not practice some key vocabulary skills while reading articles and stories about groundhogs and the Groundhog Day holiday? In this Groundhog Day Escape Room & Webscape, students work through four reading challenges to track the groundhog to see if winter is going to end. They read fiction and nonfiction passages and answer vocabulary questions to find the clues that lead to the groundhog. Original videos keep the students engaged in the story throughout the entire journey. This Escape Room comes with a print version, a Self-Correcting Webscape, and a Google Slides format.
