Third graders use math standards to budget, plan, and carry out a grocery shopping trip. This print- and – go no prep PBL will have your students engaged in meaningful math for multiple lessons.

 

Your parents have given you the responsibility of going to the supermarket and purchasing all the food and necessary items your family will need for the week. It is your job to budget for all the items, compare costs of similar items, analyze sales prices, and make other decisions about your family’s grocery purchase.

 

⭐ This resource contains a standards-based unit in both printable PDF and Google Slides versions – so it’s the perfect activity to increase engagement and interest in any classroom. Students follow instructions on using addition and subtraction within 100, and solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies, and more! Additional “challenge activities” engage students and develop further understanding of the concepts and skills.

 

⭐ This project-based learning task that involves using the following CCSS math standards to solve problems related to grocery shopping.

  • 3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations.
  • 3.NBT.A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
  • 3.MD.A.1 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes.
