Description

Measurement & Geometry – 4th Grade – Make A Quilt Project Based Learning

⭐ This low-prep/no-prep measurement & geometry project based learning activity will have your 4th grade students fully engaged in meaningful math practice. Students use their measurement and geometry skills to solve problems related to quilt making. Students follow instructions on quilt making while measuring lengths, reading clues, counting and drawing lines, dividing into equal square units, and more. Additional “challenge activities” engage students and develop further understanding of the concepts and skills.

⭐ This resource contains a standards-based unit in both a low-prep printable PDF and a no-prep Google Slides format – so it’s the perfect activity for any classroom.

⭐ This project-based learning task involves using the following CCSS math standards to solve problems related to quilt making.

  • 4.MD.A.1 Know the relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a 2-column table.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Use the 4 operations to solve word problems, including problems involving single fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as a number line that features a measurement scale.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit. Solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots.
  • 4.MD.C.5 Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed by 2 rays that share a common endpoint and understand concepts of angle measurement.
  • 4.MD.C.6 Measure and sketch angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor.
  • 4.MD.C.7 Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • 4.GA.1 Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular/parallel lines. Identify these in 2-D figures.
  • 4.G.A.2 Classify 2-D figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines or angles. Recognize and identify right angles.
  • 4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a 2-D figure as a line across the figure, such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify and draw lines of symmetry.

Key Features:
