Environment & Traits NGSS 3-LS3-2 Science Differentiated Reading Passages
⭐️ How are plant and animal traits influenced by their environment? This science reading unit contains differentiated Lexile leveled reading comprehension passages and questions that are all about environmental influences on traits. Students will build background to learn how the environment an organism lives in impacts its traits. Students will read about the decreasing polar bear population due to climate change, coyotes adapting to live in cities, how drought impacts corn crops, and plants that adapt to wildfires.
⭐️ This unit is perfect for 3rd grade. It was created to align with 3-LS3-3 but can be used in any classroom to teach students about the environmental influence on traits while practicing reading comprehension skills.
⭐️Integrates key reading skills, with a focus on cause and effect. Incorporates key vocabulary, text features, graphic organizers, and open-ended questions.

Each passage set includes two differentiated passages on a third-grade level (one at the beginning of the band, one towards the end) and a question set geared towards comprehension and science mastery. The first question is differentiated to include a fill-in-the-blank diagram (lower complexity) or an open-ended diagram (higher complexity).
